Breaking Barriers at Watson Lake: The First-Ever Adaptive Youth Kayaking Event in Yavapai County

Have you ever witnessed a moment where pure joy meets personal breakthrough? Where the impossible suddenly feels possible? That’s exactly what happened on May 21st at Watson Lake in Prescott, Arizona. We made history with the very first Adaptive Youth Kayaking program in Yavapai County. And let me tell you something—it was powerful.

This was more than a kayaking event. It was a movement. It was about breaking barriers, opening hearts, and giving our young athletes a chance to discover their strength, their courage, and their joy through the power of adaptive sports for youth in Arizona.

We teamed up with the amazing students from Bradshaw Mountain High School and their athletics program to create a day full of excitement, challenge, and transformation. Watching these young people get in the water—some for the very first time—was nothing short of inspirational.

Teamwork Behind the Breakthrough: Organizations That Made It Happen

Pulling off something this impactful doesn’t happen without some serious teamwork. We couldn’t have done it without our friends at New Horizons Center, who came through at the last minute with essential equipment. That’s real support, and we’re so grateful.

Big love goes to everyone of our volunteers, you are the glue that makes these programs possible.

Thank you to Camp Verde Unified School District for their ongoing commitment to inclusive programming. And let’s give it up for our incredible partners:

·       High Country Adaptive Sports-Flagstaff

·       Arizona Disabled Sports- Mesa

·       Ability360 Outdoors - Tempe

·       New Horizons Empowerment Center- Prescott Valley

These are organizations on a mission, just like us, to uplift, empower, and unleash human potential through adaptive sports and recreation.

Why Adaptive Sports Change Lives: Confidence, Belonging, and Growth

If you’re not familiar with adaptive sports, let me paint you a picture. Imagine a young person who’s spent most of their life being told what they can’t do. Then they get on a kayak, start paddling, and suddenly, all those limits vanish. That’s not just sports. That’s transformation.

Adaptive sports for youth in Arizona are about much more than enjoying the outdoors. They’re about confidence. They’re about community. And they’re about creating experiences that ripple out into every area of life.

One young athlete might fall in love with adaptive water skiing and suddenly feel brave enough to try adaptive cycling. Another might find themself laughing uncontrollably while tubing, and realize they’re ready to join a local volunteer group.

Let’s talk about belief. Belief in oneself. That first successful ride across the water on a surfboard? That can be the spark that makes someone say, “Yeah, I can take that online course. I can chase that dream.”

And independence? It’s everything. The sense of freedom that comes from wakeboarding can be the thing that inspires someone to start using public transportation—and from there, the sky's the limit.

From Uncertainty to Unstoppable: What We Saw on the Water

The kayaking event at Watson Lake was just the beginning. We saw friendships forming, fears dissolving, and a whole lot of smiles. The lake echoed with laughter, cheers, and the sound of paddles hitting the water.

We watched students go from unsure to unstoppable. One moment, they were hesitating at the shoreline. Next, they were in full paddle mode, gliding across the lake with pride. That’s the beauty of adaptive sports for youth in Arizona. They create space for the discovery of physical ability, of emotional strength, and of social connection.

More Than Kayaking: Explore Our Full Range of Adaptive Water Sports

While our kayaking event made history, it's just one part of what we offer. Adaptive water sports are our jam, and we’re proud to provide a full spectrum of accessible activities for all ages and all disabilities.

Our almost year-round (March-November) programs include:
